The year 2020 is unlike anything the travel industry has seen before. COVID-19 pandemic kept millions of people in quarantine and imposed travel restrictions. The United Nations World Tourism Organization estimated that global international tourist arrivals might decrease by 20–30% in 2020, leading to a potential loss of US$30–50 billion.
As the world slowly starts to recover, some new travel trends emerge. According to MMGY, 2020 could very well be “the year of the car.” Travel bookings on domestic destinations will be mostly the case in 2020, and travelers with dogs will put their dogs in the priority lane.
According to Booking.com travel trends 2020 survey:
42% of global pet owners admitted that in 2019 that in the coming year, they would choose their holiday destinations based on whether they can take their pets. 55% of pet owners stated that their pets are as important to them as their children, whereas 49% of pet owners are willing to pay more to stay at a pet friendly accommodation. These percentages will rise for travelers with car visiting destinations within their country. Pet owners got ever more attached with their pets during quarantine time, and leaving a pet at a kennel facility or at a pet sitter seems risky and costly.
Destinations all over Europe should turn this crisis into an opportunity to create infrastructures and unique services for 67 million European travelers with dogs. For hotels, rental properties, cafes, and activity providers in the travel industry are now more important than ever, not simply allowing dogs on their premises but also creating a welcoming environment for travelers and their precious companions.
